Modern Rituals is a group exhibition that holds a mirror up to the private rituals explored throughout the artists' lives, or perhaps experienced as a bystander in this modern day and age.
We dive with painter Jennie de Groot back to a time when grieving underwater became a safe space. We go on a surreal journey with painter Tyla Jane Armstrong into her daily practice of exploring one's own mind and imagination. We get an introduction to the darker side of wellness culture with photographer Tia Ranginui as she explores the modern ritual of looksmaxxing. We look up into the night sky with painter Tom Armstrong, and I can't help but think of all the gamers out there late at night meeting up in cyberspace. Finally, local sculptor Kirk Nicholls presents a larger than life sculpture made from recycled household plastic. Echoing the silhouette of a gamer with hoodie up, hands poised around an unseen controller; it speaks to the rituals of play, consumption, and identity in the digital age.
